Pediatric Physiotherapy

Pediatric Physiotherapy in Okinawa

As a parent raising a child in Japan, sometimes you can be concerned with how your child moves. Whether it be not sitting up as a baby, walking on tip toes as a toddler, or limping as a young athlete. We have pediatric physiotherapy available in Okinawa to help you. This article explains pediatric physiotherapy, signs that it may suit your child, what happens during the first session, and how to find a trustworthy service with English-speaking professionals.

What is Pediatric Physiotherapy?

Pediatric physiotherapy helps improve how babies, children, and adolescents move. Using specialist techniques to improve strength, coordination, and confidence.

Where adults tend to come in with a problem, children often come with injuries or just not doing what other children their age are doing. Because children’s bodies are still growing, pediatric physiotherapists use different approaches. Physical Therapy addresses gross motor and functional development to improve development, regain function, and prevent disability associated with pediatric conditions, illness, or injury. This can often resemble playing games and doing various activities to help their development.

The most common reasons parents will refer their children to pediatric physiotherapy include delays in achieving motor milestones, flat head (positional plagiocephaly), strong head preference in infants (torticollis), sporting/orthopedic injuries, post-operative rehabilitation, and muscular nerve conditions.

When Would My Child Benefit From Pediatric Physiotherapy?

If your child is not achieving motor milestones, appears clumsy or very one-sided, or is recovering from an injury, it may be a good idea to speak to a professional.

The most obvious place to start is looking at your child’s motor milestones. Children develop these skills through play, learning, communication, behavior, and movement. You can monitor your child’s milestones from 2 months to 5 years of age. You know your child best. Don’t delay. If you have noticed they are not meeting certain milestones or have lost skills they previously had, speak to your child’s doctor. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends standardized screening at your child’s 9, 18, and 30 month marks, or if you have any concerns.

However, parents sometimes seek physiotherapy for concerns that a milestone checklist does not cover. This could be a baby who always looks in one direction and doesn’t want to turn their head the other way, a kindergartner who gets tired quicker than their peers, or a ten-year-old football fan with a swollen knee. This is where you as a parent, knowing your child best, come in!

What Will Happen During The First Session?

During your first session, the therapist will assess your child’s development, gently engage them in play, and create a home program.

Your therapist will observe how your child moves, plays, and reacts. They will then create a picture of your child’s strengths, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Treatment aims to improve gross motor development, coordination, strength, balance, and participation in play and leisure activities.

Family-centered care is central to our treatment. Your physio will consider you as the expert on your child, involve you during your session, and provide you with activities to do at home. Your child can make progress during these everyday activities.

An English-speaking therapist helps you follow your home program and answer any questions you may have.

Common Mistakes Parents Make

Putting off referring your child. Whilst there is a wide range of development, many children will catch up on their own. However, remember the CDC advice was there for a reason! You know your child best, and there is little to lose from referring them early. Screening and assessment are easy to do.

Comparing your child to others. Whilst your child may be one of many 1-year-olds at the playground, there is an amazing range of ‘normal’. Milestone checklists and doctors are there to help you understand how your child is progressing. Other children are just there for company!

Returning your young athlete to sport too soon after an injury. Often children cannot tell the difference between pain and injury. Rushing them back into sport can cause strain on healing tissues and make them lose confidence in the sport. Having a physio guide them back to sport will help.

FAQs About Pediatric Physiotherapy in Okinawa

What ages do pediatric physios help?

We can help from infancy to adolescence. Babies are often referred for milestone and head shape concerns, school-aged children for injuries and coordination, and teenagers for sporting rehab and postoperative rehab.

Do I need a referral?

No, if you go to a private clinic such as Tokyo Rehab we do not require a referral. If you are having treatment through a hospital or Japan’s public health insurance, you will usually require your child’s doctor to be involved. Ask the clinic how they operate.

How do I know if my baby is developing correctly?

If your baby is not hitting milestones or has stopped doing something they used to do, speak to your child’s doctor. You know your child best, so do not delay.

Can pediatric physio help with flat head/torticollis?

Yes! Flat head (positional plagiocephaly) and torticollis (tightened/shortened muscles in the neck causing babies to favor one side) are common reasons babies are referred to physio. We will gently mobilize your baby, position them, and play with them to encourage them to turn their head comfortably both ways.

What should we bring to our first appointment?

Bring anything that can help us get to know your child. This can include your maternal and child health handbook (boshi techo) if you have one, notes from doctors, a list of your concerns, and clothing to allow your child to move. You will be with your child for the entire session.

How quickly will we see improvements?

This depends on your child, their condition, and their goals. A good therapist will set clear goals with you at the beginning of treatment and regularly review them with you.
